Emperor’s can dive up to an astounding 1,850 feet, and hold their breath for over 20 minutes! This ability makes them the Olympian divers out of all the penguin species. They dive to these depths in search of pink little crustaceans called Antarctic krill, which aggregate in the trillions on the edges of ice sheets. An Emperor parent must travel miles to reach this food source, spend hours hunting it, and then trek miles again back to the colony to feed a hopeful chick and dutiful parent. In the piece, I wanted to share a portrait of a devoted parent and a curious chick who await the return of its other family member, showing patience, belief, and pride in their stances.
