Kelly of the Wild

Eve of the Wolf

Do you love wolves? Say hello to the Florida Black Wolf! Florida once had two species of wolves but this one was pure black, save for a small white spot emblazoned on their chests. They often roamed the southeast in small packs, hunting deer and other game in pine forests and prairies.

But, why haven’t we ever heard about them? Unfortunately, they were declared extinct in 1908 due to overhunting, long before conservation took hold in the states! However, there are rumors of their existence with a handful of sightings in the last 100 year’s. Maybe one day we’ll hear the howl of wolves again in the forests of Florida.
