Sobek is the Egyptian crocodile god, seen as a bringer of good fortune, fertility, and the protector of sacred things. The American Crocodile, while far more timid and smaller than the Nile Crocodile, in a way, acts much like the mythical Sobek as a protector of the sacred mangrove habitat, not because of its ferocity, but because of it’s "threatened status" and position as a keystone species.
With nearly 3,000 American Crocodiles living alongside their Alligator cousins in South Florida, this prehistoric being has afforded greater protection for marine landscapes like those of Biscayne National Park — essentially protecting thousands of acres of mangroves solely because they exist. All of this is a reality today because a few individuals saw the value in protecting a crocodile from extinction, because just like us, they believed all life deserves the opportunity to thrive.
